God and Dog
(Dave Allikas)
Neither one will answer when you call
Or obey your simplest request
Both are known as man’s best friend, but both fall
Far, far short when we put that to the test
It’s strange, they’re very different; but at least
Where human beings are concerned, they’re much the same
Could be when Adam christened every bird and beast
He left a clue in the spelling of one name.
God and dog, dog and God
Each is the other backwards; yes, you blithely nod
At least, until you stop and count
Their common traits; and as they mount
You wonder, is the fur just a façade?
God and dog, dog and God.
When you go out and try to have some fun
You feel guilty every time they cross your mind
Yes, we plan our lives around them, but there’s never one
Single “thanks” or “attaboy” for old mankind
In times of crisis, though, they’ll help; the Holy Writ
And children’s lit cite cases where that’s what they’ve done
And they might in real life, too, friends, but my advice: Don’t sit
In that burning room and wait for either one--
God or dog, dog or God
Sometimes Rover and Jehovah seem like two peas in a pod
In fact, the former pees everywhere
And the latter, He’s everywhere
So they both force you to watch your step--it’s odd
God and dog, dog and God.
So, next time you look into those two guilty eyes
Then at the leg of the Chippendale he’s chewed
Don’t vent your rage; that could prove most unwiseIf every dog has his judgment day, will you be screwed.
God and dog, dog and GodYou all might doubt it’s the almighty in that four-legged, flea-plagued bod
But not me--I’ve long since made the leap
Based on the piles wide and deep
That have always lined the path through life I’ve trod
God and dog, dog and God.
